communication 3

The Knowledge Gap

Tichenor, G.A.

Communicaton Skills :

 The Knowledge Gap:

This model focuses on the systematic differences in knowledge between better-informed and less informed segments of populations.

Tichenor, Donohue and Ohen at the University of Minnesota first proposed the knowledge gap theory in the 1970s. They believed that every member of society does not evenly acquire the increase of information in society: people with higher socioeconomic status tend to have better ability to acquire information. This leads to a division of two groups: a group of better-educated people who know more about most things, and those with low education who know less. Lower socio-economic status (SES) people, defined partly by educational level, have little or no knowledge about public affairs issues, are disconnected from news events and important new discoveries, and usually are not concerned about their lack of knowledge.

Core Assumptions and Statements:

The knowledge gap can result in an increased gap between people of lower and higher socioeconomic status. The attempt to improve people’s life with information via the mass media might not always work the way this is planned. Mass media might have the effect of increasing the difference gap between members of social classes.

Tichenor, Donohue and Olien presented five reasons for justifying the knowledge gap:

1) People of high socioeconomic status have better communication skills, education, reading, comprehending and remembering information.

2) People of higher socioeconomic status can store information more easily or remember the topic form background knowledge.

3) People of higher socioeconomic status might have a more relevant social context.

4) People of higher socioeconomic status are better in selective exposure, acceptance and retention.

5) The nature of the mass media itself is that it is geared toward persons of higher socioeconomic status.

Media presenting information should realize that people of higher socioeconomic status get their information in a different way than lower educated people. Furthermore, this hypothesis of the knowledge gap might help in understanding the increased gap between people of higher socioeconomic status and people of lower socioeconomic status. It can be used in various circumstances.

The methods used in media researches concerned with knowledge gap are surveys of mass media and tests of knowledge.

communication 3

The individual differences theory

Contemporary theories of mass communication
The individual differences theory:

When psychological theorists seeking basic understanding of human conduct away from explanations of complex behavior based primarily upon inherited mechanisms they looked for new explanations built upon very different principles. If nature failed to give the human individual with automatic ability to guide his behavior, then he surely had to acquire it from the environment around him. Psychologists, then, developed great interest in the process of human learning. By the end of World War I, academic psychology was intellectually prepared for new direction. One new direction was provided by the concept of “conditioning”.

Psychologists stressed the importance of “association” and “habit” as significant aspects of learning. Laws of association had been repeatedly formulated, and according to William James (1890) habits that were formed through association might have a physiological basis. John Wastson introduced a further significant element to modern psychology with his objective emphasis on behaviorism. The result of these intellectual trends was a number of competing theories of learning:

1. Motivation:

Psychologists, also, became interested in another concept called “motivation”. The study of incentives in laboratory experiments convinced them that some motivational urges can be acquired through learning and that not all individuals can be motivated by precisely the same incentives.

Ingredients of the S.R. Relationship:

1- Presentation of a Stimulus.
2- Perception of a Stimulus.
3- Interpretation of the Stimulus.
4- Trial response of the Stimulus.
5- Perception of the consequences.
6- Re-interpretation of the consequences.

One-Step Flow Model :

This model(45) states that the mass media channels
communicate directly with the mass audience, without letting
the message pass through opinion leaders. The one-step model

recognizes the following:-
1- The media is not all-powerful.
2- Differing impact of the mass media message according to the selectivity factors.
3- Differing effects occur for various members of the receiving audience.

There is always a concern about the possible powerful influence of mass communication upon the attitude and opinions of human beings . Sometimes the message receivers react collectively ( e.g. panic) . That kind of reaction is due to the contagion effect ( imitation) of the mass media .

1-The Bullet Theory / the Hypodermic Needle Model :

This theory assumes that mass media have direct , immediate and powerful effects on the audience to the extent that they can shape public opinion .

This is based on a psychological theory ( the S-R.Mechanistic Theory) .

According to this theory , the media send message to atomized masses, who are waiting to receive them . Intervening factors have no place in this theory . So, the model pictures mass media as a hypodermic needle injecting a passive audience with a uniform serum .

However, some studies found out that face to face contact is more powerful than mass media in forming political opinions.

2- The Two - Step Flow Model :

According to this model , ideas flow from radio or print to opinion leaders, and from these to the less active section of the population .

The rationale is that each individual is a member of many groups, formal and informal . He is affected by them . Opinion leaders influence others in decision making and opinion formation .

However, there are six limitations to this model (e.g there are channels of information other than the media ) . There are two types of opinion leaders : local and cosmopolitan .

3- The One - Step Flow Model :

According to this model, the mass media channels communicate directly with the mass audience , without letting the message pass through opinion leaders .

That is related to the saliency of the message (high, medium or low) .

4- The Multi - Step Flow Model :

There are a number of steps in the communication flow from the source to the receiver . The exact number of steps depends on the source’s intent , the availability of the medium used, the extent of the exposure of the audience , the nature of the message and the salience of the message to the audience

Today most communication research is focussed on this model .

3- Message:

The third ingredient in the com. process is the message. The purpose of the source has to be expressed in the form of a message.

We have to know that there are some factors needed to be taken into account in the message, there are:
a) Message code, the way in which symbols are structured.

b) Content which means the selection of material to express the purpose.

c) Treatment, it means the way in which the message is presented, that is frequency, emphasis … etc.

d) The frame of reference through which the audience receives the message.

Notice: Each person has stored experience, consisting of beliefs and values related to himself and to his group and the message that challenges these beliefs or values may be rejected.

4- Channel:

A Com. channel is a medium through which a message is transmitted from a source to a receiver.

The choice of channels is often an important factor in the effective ness of com.

We have to pay attention that content, code, treatment of a message are related to our choice of channels.

There are some dimensions can permit to evaluate the effectiveness of different channels:
1- Channel Credibility:  This means the expertness and trust- worthiness of a channel as perceived by the receivers.

2- Channel Feedback:  The degree to which a channel provides the opportunity for the receiver to respond affects the source.

3- Channel Involvement:  This refers to the perceptual effort required by all the senses in order to understand the information.

4- Channel Availability: This refers to the extent to which a channel is utilized to reach the target audience.

5- Channel permanency: This is the ability of a Com. channel overtime to preserve a message.

6- Channel Multiplicative power: It refers to the channel potential for covering large geographical areas with speed and timeliness.

7- Channel Complementary: It refers to the channel's potential for supplementing the Com. work of another channel.

The rest of Basic elements of the com. model
5- Effects: Com. Effects are the changes in receiver's behavior that occur as a result of the transmission of a message.

And these effects are so important, so the purpose of most communication research as indicated by social scientists is to study the effects of com. leading to make more effective Com.

Feedback is a response by the receiver to the source's message, which the source may use to modify his further message.

According to Rogers, there are 2 kinds of Feedback, the negative and the positive effects:

Positive Feedback: Confirms to the source that the intended effect of the message was achieved, and everything is going the desired way.

Negative Feedback: Informs the source that the intended effect of the message was not achieved, so negative Feedback leads to change or hostility among the elements in the com. process.

Also there are 2 other types of Feedback:
1- Purposive Feedback:
When the receiver intend to inform the source about effect of the message.

2- non purposive Feedback:
When the receiver doesn't intend to inform the source about the effect of the message.

Of Course in a Face –To- face situation there is maximum opportunity for quick exchange of information.

7- Noise:
The noise limits the effectiveness of the com. message.

There are 2 major types of com. Noise:
Channel noise and semantic noise.

Channel noise: describes any thing which interferes with the fidelity of the physical transmission of the message.

Semantic noise: This type occurs when a message is understood even though it is received exactly as it was transmitted.

We have some sources of semantic noise such as:
1- Wards too difficult, subjects too difficult for the message receiver to understand.

2- The differences of the meanings of the same word between the source and the receiver.

3- Cultural differences between message sender and the message receiver which cause differences in receiving the meanings of the words, eye contacts, hands or other body movements.

The definitions of communication:-

What is the communication?

There are many definitions for the communication, each definition concerns about an important factor or side in the com. process.

We have six definitions, we’ll take all of them and the main aspect or the important side or factor that each definition concerns about.

(1)The com. is a tool that makes societies possible and by its nature, chiefly distinguishes human from other societies.
(It concerns about the role of com. to distinguish the human society.)

(2)The com. is the transmission of information, ideas, emotions, skills through the use of symbols, words, pictures, figures and graphs.

(It concerns about the transmission of a message.)

(3)Com. is the process of transmitting ideas, information, attitudes from the source to a receiver for the purpose of influencing with intent.

(It concerns about the relation between the source and the receiver and the aim of influencing).

(4)The com. is all those planned or unplanned processes through which one person influences the behaviour of other persons.

(It concerns about the behavioural consequences of the com. as an effective process).

(5)Com. is the mechanism through which human relations exist and develop all the symbols of the mind, together with the means of conveying them through space and preserving them in time.

(It concerns about the role of com. to develop the symbols or the ideas in our mind).

(6) The com. is the basis of all that we call social in the functioning of the living organism.

(It concerns about the role of com. in all our functions).

Factors in the definition:

(1) Dynamic rather than static.

(2) Continuously changes.

(3) Has no specific beginning or specific end.

(4) We can notice (affect and effect relation) between all the aspects of com. process.

(1) Process of linking between the source or the sender and the receivers of the message.

(2) So changes in any set of forces /aspect affect the operation of all other processes to produce a unique and total effect.

-The effects which distinguish the society from the other , country from the other, or the same country in a specific time and other time .

SO;

-ALL the various groups cover the situations in whish information is transmitted from reference group .

First of all, we must know that the com process itself is more complicated than any picture or description of it so there are many attempts to develop models of the process, and of course, these models are different from each other.

Figure 1:

This figure described the com. By concerning about some ingredients which are: Source- Encoder- Message- decoder- Destination and feedback.

Most of the researchers call our attention to 7 elements in the com. Process:

Source, Message, channel, receiver, effects, feedback and noise.

1- Source/ Encoder:

The source always has ideas, needs, intentions, information and a purpose for communicating which he translates into a code.

There are at least four kinds of factors within the source, which can increase the fidelity in com. these are:

- Com. Skills

- Attitude.

- Knowledge level.

- Socio- Cultural system.

2- Receiver/ Decoder:

The receiver- decoder is an important ingredient in our model.

If the source doesn’t reach the receiver with his message, he might as well have talked to himself.

The receiver always has to be kept in mind when the source makes decisions concerning the different Com. variables.

We cam say that the relationship between the skill level of the source and the receiver is a vital determinant of com. fidelity.
